Fighting for Fair Insurance Rates
Steve Geller has been a State and National Leader in the fight for lower Homeowners (windstorm) insurance rates. Despite being in the Minority (Democratic) Party, Geller was instrumental in the passage of the only legislation in recent years that dramatically reduced the cost of Windstorm Insurance. Unfortunately, after Geller was term limited out of the Senate in 2008, the Republican Legislature has been repealed much of this legislation, resulting in another substantial round of Insurance rate increases.
Geller fought the Insurance Industry during his time in Tallahassee. It was Geller who successfully called on the Republican Senate President to require the top executives of the Insurance Industry to testify under oath, by subpoena if necessary, as to why Insurance rates were so high, and why they had not reduced their rates more. Geller Co-Chaired the Select Committee which took the testimony.
Even after leaving the Legislature, Geller continues to fight for lower Windstorm rates. He has written several articles explaining why a National Natural Disaster Fund would result in lower windstorm rates, especially for homeowners, condominium residents, and businesses here in South Florida, and has testified to a United States House of Representatives Subcommittee on this topic.
Over the years, Geller has received awards such as the "Insurance Consumer Rights" awards and other awards from Groups such as the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, The Florida Justice Association, the Florida AFL-CIO, and the Florida Consumer Action Network. Because of his relentless efforts to reduce Insurance rates, and despite his acknowledges expertise in this area, Geller has never received any award from the Insurance Industry.
