Bio
Steven Geller was born in New York in 1958 and moved to South Broward 7 years later. He attended Florida State University for college and law school. Thereafter, he returned to South Broward, started a successful law practice, and beautiful family: his wife Laurel and thereafter, his sons Ben and Marc.
In 1988, Steve was elected to the Florida House of Representatives by voters in South Broward including Hollywood, Hallandale, and Pembroke Pines. He was re-elected four times. In 1998, he was elected to the Florida Senate. He has long been recognized for his leadership and problem solving abilities. Despite Republican control of the Legislature, he still wielded unprecedented power as a Democratic who could get things done. In 2006, he was elected by his Democratic colleagues as the Minority Leader of the Florida Senate.
During his legislative career Steve developed and championed many bills and amendments. He often bridged partisan divides when the quality of life, education and public safety for Florida's children and seniors were at stake. For example, after the tragic death of a 14 year old Hallandale girl on a carnival ride, Steve passed a bill that applied stricter safety inspections of the rides. This bill has prevented numerous tragedies involving our most precious asset: Our children. Just as Steve began his legislative career protecting children, it was only fitting that his last bill passed in 2008 also protected children. Better known as the the Steve Geller Autism Coverage Act, his final bill forces health insurance companies to cover Autistic childrens' rehabilitation costs and help the quality of life for thousands of Florida parents struggling with enormous medical costs.
Steve also served the residents of Broward when he was elected as the Chairman of the Broward County Legislative Delegation.
Steve has also been a nationally recognized expert and leader serving as National President of both the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) and the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS).
Steve has been a much sought after speaker and frequent guest on local, statewide and national TV and radio on insurance, local government, growth management and political issues. He has spoken on the Randi Rhodes Radio show a number of times, and has been featured on CNN on the Lou Dobbs Show and on the WPLJ Channel 10 Michael Putney show.
He has appeared on Local, Nationwide and International TV and Radio many times, Including TV appearances with Wolf Blitzer, John Zarella, and Lou Dobbs on CNN, C-Span, MSN, Fox, as well as the Major Networks.
